Dear Charnock Road Elementary School Families and Friends:

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year! Everyone at the Home of the Roadrunners is excited for another year of teaching and learning.  We look forward to partnering with you as we work to help students foster and model safe, respectful, and responsible choices.

The Charnock Road (CR) community has been working diligently as demonstrated by the Roadrunners exceeding the District achievement goals in language arts during the 2017-2018 school year as measured by the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment.  Research shows that early literacy is the gateway to future success in college and careers.  Once again this year, teachers will work with colleagues to deepen implementation of the LAUSD Early Language and Literacy Plan (ELLP), a data driven instructional approach designed to accelerate student achievement in English Language Arts in TK through 2nd grade.  Families and friends, you can support this literacy work by reading with your child and/or ensuring that your child has a quiet place to read independently for at least 20 minutes nightly.

In addition to our impressive language arts achievement, Charnock Road had its third year of continuous growth in the area of mathematics as measured by the Spring 2018 Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) test.  At CR we are dedicated to ensuring that all students develop and master math fluency, conceptual understanding, and problem solving skills.  We look forward to once again partnering with UCLA around the study of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI), a student-centered approach to teaching math.  Visit our “Parents” link at CharnockRoadSchool.com for more information about SBAC and CGI.

At the end of the last school year, we congratulated teachers Edwina Magana and Margot McLaren on their retirement and thanked them for the decades of service in the Charnock Road community.  We also wished the best of luck to both Jessica Hecht on her relocation to the San Jose Unified School District in Northern California, and Jessie Yim on her move to the La Mesa Spring Valley School District.

Join us in welcoming several new CR faculty members to the team: Denise Tiscareno, Preschool Collaborative Class (PCC); Dakota Dougherty, K-2 AUT Core teacher; Jasmine Chan, grade 3 teacher; and Kate Cella, grades 4/5 teacher.  In addition, Parents Love Charnock (PLC) volunteer Lilly Gabriel officially joins the staff as our Community Representative.  It will be another great year of collaboration.

Attendance will once again be a top priority during the 2018-2019 school year.  Studies show that students are more likely to succeed when they maintain a “Proficient/Advanced” attendance rate of 96% or greater, 7 or fewer absences during the school year.  Visit our “Parents” link at CharnockRoadSchool.com for more information about how you can support your child’s attendance.

We, at Charnock Road Elementary School, look forward to working collaboratively with you, our families and friends, to support student achievement.  Back-to-School Night will be Wednesday, September 12, and our first Coffee with the Principal is scheduled for Friday, October 20.  As always, visit our website at CharnockRoadSchool.com for the most up-to-date information, and be sure to support and follow us on Instagram and Facebook as we celebrate successes throughout the 2018-2019 school year.

Roadrunners go far!

Respectfully,

Mark Duncan

Principal
